Installing a Origo 3000 cooker

Hello

As 'The Oracle' (Steve B) is away on holiday I wonder if anyone else
can help. I have just ordered a Origo 3000 cooker for my boat. Does
anyone know if the original gas cooker gimbals and pot holders can be
used on the Origo or do I need to order the special Origo ones?

Best Wishes to all Vega sailors for Christmas and the New Year

Cheers

I used the Origo gimbals. They're not too expensive and well made. I did
have to put some spacers in because the cooker is about 1cm narrower than
the aluminium box that the old cooker was installed in. Otherwise it was
all very easy. I'd recommend the origo cooker as very suitable for the vega
(and installing it freed up some space where the old gas bottles were for
the BBQ...) Meths is hard to find in the UK, but if you can find a shop
that'll sell you 5 litres at once (decorating shops, mainly) then it's not
too bad. Avoid buying meths in the 500ml bottles as it's very pricey.

Best Wishes,
Tom

Hi David!

Mine didn't fit with the original gimbal that was
installed in our boat. Next season I will order the
Origo 3000 gimbal kit and install it...I think they
are around $90.00 (US)

You might be able to jerry rig washers or a piece of
band iron to fit, but I figured i would shell out the
money to have the perfect fit!

Hi David,

From my own experience I would recommend using the Origo items.
The units I purchased were designed so that you could lift and unlatch (but not release) the cooker from the gimbals and move it back / down so that it stows below the level of the original working surface and you are able to replace this cover. You will need to incorporate some wooden rails in each side of the cooker 'box' to provide support at a level which allows minimal clearance between cover and cooker when the latter is in the lowered position. These rails also need to have shallow cut-outs that the cooker body is able to drop in, thus providing restraint to restrict movement when the boat heels.
It's only a guess but I don't think the original pan restraints will fit the Origo.

Lastly, a word of warning. If you opt for the above arrangement, don't ever be tempted to operate the cooker off the gimbals whilst the boat is under way (heeling). In this mode the flame can creep under the upper body of the cooker and at best you will end up with fried (and hot!) regulator knobs - at worst who knows?

Regards,
Frank.

You're correct about the regulator knobs. if they get too hot you
can't close the burner. Our solution was to put a piece of aluminum
foil inside the cooker body behind the knobs and, more importantly,
just change our point of sail to avoid cooking while heeled over on
the starboard tack.

I used the original gimbals and made triangular stainless pieces to mount on either side of the Origo.? These pieces have offset bends to widen them to match the original gimbals and allow the stove to hang from the gimbals.? Free and easy to do.?? Bill Bach? V1071

Thanks Bill

Thanks everyone, looks like I will have to wait until it arrives and
just look at how it fits. Pity about the pan holders.
I can buy 98% pure alcohol in Cyprus but believe this will burn with
an almost invisible flame. I read somewhere that adding about 10%
water will make it more obvious. Any other ideas? We are back in the
UK for Christmas so will not be reading any replies over the holidays.

Merry Christmas to all
