Installing a ladder on O'Day 23

Hi:

I have a 78 O'Day 23. The motor was installed on the port side of the Stern. That leaves only the Starboard side for a transom ladder. DR marine had the original spec ladder. My problem is that it is a tight squeeze to climb in because the back stay chain plate is off centered toward the starboard side. Do I have to move the out board to the Starboard side? Is this my only option?

I purchased mine from D&R five or six years ago. I do not know if it is the same ladder or not. I mounted mine on the Starboard side and did not have any problems with the back stay. I would not move the motor mount, you will have some very big holes to fill. On Monday I will dig out a picture and post it so you can see what we did.

The biggest thing to consider is how low the ladder is going to extend into the water. It is easier to take the big step into the boat at the top than to take the big step out of the water onto the ladder. Think about older folks that may join you for a sail or folks with knee problems.

Do you climb over the back rail getting into the boat or do you crawl through. I'm just trying to picture it.

I do not have a factory back rail, I made my own. We climb over it. When we get to the top step of the ladder we grab the back stay and step onto the transom and swing one leg at a time over the back rail. Getting over the back rail has never been a problem for anybody to date. I don't think crawling through would be possible for anybody but a small child. Don't have access to my pictures till Monday, I will post one. Picture worth more words than I could ever write.

I have an original ladder and it's on the side of the chainplate. We don't have any problems with it, so my recommendation would be to leave the motor mount where it is.
