I was looking at a 33' Morgan Out Island for a first liveaboard, but they head does not have a holding tank. It just pumps straight overboard and I was wondering how difficult it would be to install a holding tank and approx how much would I be looking at $ wise to complete a project like this?

There are several components that may need to be installed. You will be needing some or all of these depending on how your boat is currently outfitted. Of course the holding tank, Y-valve, vent, hoses and a deck fitting for pumping out. You need to determine how close the tank can be mounted to the head. The farther away the more difficult things can become. Tanks will be the largest part of the expense. I spent $150 a few years ago for a 20 gallon tank. Try Ronco for plastic holding tanks. http://ronco-plastics.com/marinetanks.html They have a pretty large selection. I might also suggest Peggy's book to guide you. It helped with my installation. You'll find it here in the ship's store.

I think Jeff pretty much covered it...

I certainly won't argue with his advice to buy my book! He's about right on materials cost...labor would run the price right on up there if you have to pay for it. However, installing a tank isn't rocket science...and I'll be glad to help you spec out the system and how to install it.

Depending on where you're planning to put the boat--and your budget--there MAY be a better option than a holding tank for liveaboard waste management: a CG certified Type I MSD (device that treats waste and discharges it overboard legally and is far more environmentally friendly than a tank. If you're gonna be on an inland lake, you're stuck using a tank, though.

If you'd like some help, email me (to do that, just click on my name above the photo to the left of this post and follow instructions)...I'll be glad to help you do it.

I love this forum, always such quick replies to questions :)

The boat will be in the Texas gulf coast area. It will most likely not be sailed very often or very far, at least not in the immediate future. $$ is always a factor but I would much rather do it right since it would be a completely new install.

I will definitely check out that book and thanks for the reply Peggie!
