I am considering installing a small diesel generator on a 29.5 to keep A/C running at night (heat is beyond unbearable). Need advice

Diesel generator

may be too heavy and too bulky for your boat, I would rather consider getting the Honda EU 2000 whisch is light, quiet and can run approx 6-8 hour on one small tank of fuel. Friend of one has one and loves it! Eventually when budget allows, I will get one too.

Honda caution.

Andre's idea is a good one. But see if you can borrow one first and try it. My Honda 2000 will run my 12K Mermaid but only because I also have an inverter. The Freedom 20(2000 watt) provides a long enough "boost" during the startup. It would not run my dockmates unit without an inverter. One trick is to stagger the startup. The problem is that the waterpump and compressor come on at the same time. I have an anchor locker shoreplug so the Honda runs up front and is very quiet. Make sure there are no hatches/portlights open where CO can get in.

Honda 2k works fine for me

I run my Mermaid 12k with my Honda EU2000 without any problems. The factory supplied Mermaid electrical control box sequences the startup of the pump, blower (fan) and compressor. The pump and fan are started first, then after approximately 5 seconds, the compressor starts. The generator does have a hard time coming up to speed if I have the Eco switch on when the compressor kicks in. I usually turn the Eco function off when running the AC.
