Installing A Fresh Water System

I would like to install a pump and 2 faucets on my Oday 272. I can find plenty of information about pumps but not about electric actuating faucets, except for inexpensive units which come with less-than-one gpm pumps. Can you suggest sources for better systems? Will I need anything else besides tubing and wire?

You don't need electric faucets as the correct pumps are pressure sensitive. Check the West Marine Advisor under Fresh Water Systems.

Household faucet will work fine

...since the pump will turn on when it senses no pressure in the system, as David said. Of course, the household units have hot/cold handles which you do not need, but you should be able to locate some inexpensive bar-type faucets that only have one knob. WM carries the adaptors to hook them up to hose. You want a high-bypass pump that works without a pressure tank. Shurflow and PAR both make them. Good luck. Rick D.

As others have said...

You don't need electric acuating faucets...in fact, I've never seen one on a boat (and I've been at this for quite a few years!). What you do need is an electric (12v) water pump--I recommend Shurflo--the 1.6 gpm unit for about $60 should be right size for your boat. Remove any manual pump in the system...break the line coming out of your water tank within a foot or two of the tank...insert the pump, wire it...and voila--pressurized water. You can buy the sink faucets at Home Depot...whether you want a single cold water faucet or one that has both hot and cold depends on whether you think you'll ever add a hot water tank to the boat.

And if you have that Fresh water cooled

diesel installed ... you can get a hot water tank for the hot water as well. The water pump is installed under the port berth on my 272 right next to the fresh water tank. Didn't use an expansion tank just the pump ... works fine. Vic

Most water heaters are 115v, some also are

fitted with a heat exchanger--which is a coil of pipe inside the hot water tank through which heated cooling water from the engine circulates to heat the water in the tank while the engine is running. You can see a diagram of how it works on the Raritan website (link below)--click on water heaters when you get there...heat exchangers work the same way in all water heaters that are fitted with 'em.

Just because ....

I think the water heater was standard on the LE model along with the fresh water cooled engine. But the small 6 gal unit works like a charm and heats up fast ... all while charging the battery. The fresh water cooled engine is probably selected most of the time as it provides free hot water when running. The only real problem with the fresh water cooled engine is that now you have to use antifreeze in the fresh water side and the heat exchanger is just one more thing to get clogged up. Vic
