Up here in Maine, marinas often do not activate their pump out stations until Memorial Day or even later. I like to start my season a bit earlier. I have a head attached to a Y-valve to direct discharge overboard or to the holding tank. It's the original configuration on my 1982 Catalina 27. This year, I purchased a macerator pump so I can discharge the HT three miles out when no pump out is available. Here's the question: Will I still be able to pump out at my usual pump out stations if I route the HT outlet through the Y-valve? I'm afraid of creating an impossible constriction or too much resistance in the line. What's your advice? Phil S/V Catmandu 1982 Catalina 27 tall rig, traditional layout Atomic 4

That won't work...

The existing y-valve is in the line going INTO the tank at the top...you'll need another y-valve in the pumpout line coming out of tank at the bottom. However, depending upon the distance to the existing thru-hull and how convoluted the run would have to be, you should be able to use the toilet discharge thru-hull. Tee the line from the macerator pump into it AFTER the y-valve from the toilet.

I was thinking of bypassing the Y-valve...

... so that the head discharge goes straight into the HT, and not the Y-valve. The HT outlet would go into the Y-valve inlet, and the two Y-valve outlets would go to pump out port and to the macerator pump inlet. The macerator pump outlet would then be the only thing outputting through the discharge through-hull. From your advice above, is the problem that the Y-valve is mounted too high? I could reposition it lower. Or, do I really need to plumb a second Y-valve for some reason?
