My 1983 H-30 is on a mooring in a pretty calm harbor. I have purchased a binimi and want to install it while I'm still in the water.

I need to know if I can safely unhook the backstay if I run two of the spare mast head halyards to the port and starbord a toe rail a little behind the winch pods and snug them up. My boat is on a mooring in a pretty calm area and I have a roller furling on the forestay.

I have a single the backstay that divides into two about 7 feet over the deck of the cockpit. I think I need to temporarily remove the backstay so I can determine where the two back stay cables will pass throug through the top of the binimi and then install them.

Any advice and or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Your halyard(s) will work fine. If you purchased the bimini from us, the cut-outs for the split backstay are pre-determined and designed.

go to the Hunter owner modification section of this site. You need to install two zippers with a hole for the back stays. I would not remove your back stay. I had my fitted on the boat.
Good luck

That is a hard way to get some measurements. Measure how high the top tube will go and mark on the backstays the height of the tube. Measure the distance from the center of the port and starboard cockpit coamings to the respective marks on the back stays. A carpenters square may help to project the height. Also measure the distance from the stern cockpit coaming to the marks. Lay those measuremnts on the ground and center your canvas on them. Where the lines intersect is where your holes will be needed and at a 90 degree angle to each side is where the to be zippered slits shoud go. A 4" hole will provide a couple of inches of play up and down. Whatever you do , do not take off the backstays.
