I had a YSM 12 on my 79 H30C with the stock, 2 blade prop and I had low power thrust issues maneuvering in high wind and current. Was told that the engine wouldn't push a three blade prop, fixed or folding. I suffered in performance for over twenty years.
Then I came into some money and repowered with a 2GM20 and a three blade fixed prop. Intuition now flies at hull speed under power alone and sails at 7 kts.
Hunter knew the 30s were underpowered in 78 - 79 but they built to a price formula. So I learned how to sail my way out of trouble knowing the motor wasn't going to save my butt alone.
Now I can plan a cruise leg on the ICW and expect to arrive within the hour projected. I am actually less tired after a long motoring trip because I'm piloting a moving vessel and not just inching my way around markers and pounding through currents. Also the noise and vibration are reduced by 60% with the two cylinder engine.
A repower installed will cost less if a serviceable used engine could be found as I did. I should have borrowed the money ten years earlier and not missed out on some great trips
