While on a sail on a relatively breezy day (15 knots) in Gardiner's Bay on the east end of Long Island I was confronted with a rank amateur situation. I have owned this boat for three seasons and purchased it from someone who rebuilt it as a project and probably never sailed it. He did not provide for a reefing system and I was not experienced enough to realize it until I tried to trim the mainsail. I did install a hook on the mast for the luff but nothing for the leach.
I am about to purchase new sails and I need to set up a reefing system. The boat is a Catalina 30 tall mast and I would like to install something simple but effective. I do know my way around tools so installing hardware does not scare me.
Can anyone give me any imput on the best way to do this?

You should be able to find a C30 manual on the C30 Association website, www.catalina30.com. Go from there. The basic setup was essentially a two line reefing system, separate clew (not leech) ref line and a tack line. Many folks have used single line reefing led aft to the cockpit, but a double line system run aft is far superior. It mimics the OEM two line system. Your boat, your choice.

Stu's link only refer's to the C 30 parts manual. There is no owner's manual placed on this site. Not much appears to have been changed on this site in years. I have never seen an original C 30 owner's manual, but most of them for production yachts provide little practical information regarding rigging or sailing.

You're right, that C30 website has a lot of information, but hasn't been updated in quite some time.

One of the interesting things about the older Catalina Yachts is that they had pretty much the same systems.

So, since we C34 skippers have been hoarding information for the past 26 years on our website, why not try it out? Same diesel engines, same OEM electrical systems, spars, rigging, you name it.

Our C34 Tech wiki has the manuals, try this, and download the manual and scroll to the rigging section:

http://www.c34.org/manuals/1988/1988-C34-Owners.pdf

Good luck, and come back here if you have any more questions.
