I am looking for some guidance for installation of Genoa tracks on my 1978 23 Oday. I recently purchased a 135 Genoa. I an considering purchasing two foot lenghts of Schaefer T track 1'' X 1/8'' and mouting them just behind the original stand up blocks on the deck. Is there a better positioning/placement??? Pictures would be very helpful!! As I have owned this boat since 1983 and have not drilled any holes into the deck and want to mount the tracks in the correct position I seek some guidance from fellow 23 Oday boat owners who have installed before. I have a '78 O'day 23 with factory installed Genoa tracks. Mine are in the same place shown by Steve's picture. In my opinion they are too far back. I just had a new 125 made. My sailmaker said that's the smallest he could go and still have the proper sheeting angle with the blocks all the way forward on the track. Doesn't leave much for roller reefing. One of these days I will probably move the tracks forward.

Thanks Steve & Scott for your comments and picture. I can see by the picture that this location would probably be ok for a 150. I definately need to locate the track further up. I ordered two sections of Schaefer two foot T track today. I will need to set the genoa like Steve said and check the angles. My inclination is to try and locate the track directly behind the existing block or possibly removing the existing block and work back from that point. Another thought would be to locate on the deck closer to the rail although the life line would possibly be an issue. Unfortunatley the T track I ordered is rigid and I do not think mounting on the rail with the curve would be possible and if I force a curve may affect movement of the new block?? Based on both of your experiences which "ideal" location to move the position has crossed your mind when sailing? Rail or deck position..... I am curious as to the positioning of the deck track mount on the older Oday. Any other comments or experiences also appreciated. I just installed the CF 700 Schaefer Snapfurl Furling & new genoa and anxious to try it out this weekend. I had a new 135 genny made, and my sailmaker specifically cut it so that the blocks on the track are properly positioned. You are correct that the blocks do not move far enough forward for ideal sail trimming positions when the sail is reefed down. However, the situation doesn't bother me enough to want to drill holes in my deck. Because the block positions are too far back when the genny is reefed down, the sail is depowered; fortunately, this is what I want to have happen when I reef. I know, I know, I could have better, more efficient sail shape, but I have enough leaks without creating the potential for more. Besides, I have little enough time with the boat as it is, and I don't want to spend some of it on a project that doesn't mean that much to me. Hats off to you guys with the time, money and drive to make your boats more perfect.

Thanks Steve and Mike, All your information is helpful! Sure wish that last pic showed another three feet or so. I noted the slight angle and forward positioning on the mounting of the track. Maybe since it is more forward it's not for a 135?? Perhaps for a standard jib on a furler for better reefing etc.?? The block positioning in the latest picture looks about where my original block is now. Based on my quick angle scoping of the sheet last weekend in the dark I think I would need to have more track back towards the winch to obtain maximum benifit of positioning. The T track only comes 2, 4, 6 foot sections. Is the extra track forward of the existing block for improved reefing worth the extra holes in the deck and ordering a six foot section - and cuting it in half (black coated aluminum by the way adding salt water issues) which may end up as more of a butcher job than the effort to do it? I think I tend to agree with Mike when reefing just looking for a little drive forward and to spill alot of wind since the boat is a bit tender to begin with! Well I will continue to check this post for any additional replies and pictures to help me with my decision this weekend. I have been searching the web for pictures and have not come up with much so far. The pics Steve provided here are the best so far! Thanks again! Regards - Mark

Just a comment, putting the track on the rail will reduce your pointing ability, putting the track as much inboard as fesable (given the position of the chain plates) will increase your pointing ability. After this you will be thinking mainsail traveler... That is a different ball game... a.

just aft the standup blocks
I have a 135 genoa, and I've installed the 2 foot tracks just about 2 inches aft of the standup blocks for the working jib. I could've removed those and brought the track forward but I felt I had more and perhaps better options leaving them. But it really depends on the LP and the clew height. Go ahead and hoist and mark your sheeting angles.
