How do you get at the centerboard pin on a '84 Hunter 22 to inspect it and/or change it.
The boat is in the boatyard.
Thanks for the advice.

Go to the boat info section on main heading, then owner modification and click on the 22. You will find a post for keel removal.
Some post talk about wiggling keel to check for worn pin. Also a good time to check and change keel pendant while checking pin.

if you want to visually inspect the pin for wear, you will have to remove the keel from the boat by un bolting the four bolts and dropping the keel/bracket assembly. As Mel22 points out the and there are a couple good pictures of the assembly in owner modifications section. Basically what happens is the pin wears the hole in the bracket in an oblong direction, either forward/backward, or up/down. if its f/b then the keel will yawl, if the wear is u/d then it will pitch side to side. There are other things to inspect though, the keel pin for one, which can wear down at the contact point of the bracket. My p/o replaced the pin with a bolt. Not sure that it mattered, but i am sure that it lead to the premature death of the nylon bushing. As when i pulled (what was left of my keel out) the keel had thread grooves cut into it. Its also a good idea to inspect the nylon bushing which will wear also. (I installed a bronze bushing when i had my new keel manufactured by Foss Foam) The pics in the owner mod section are good examples. And finally inspect the condition of the keel itself. Another user just lost his keel. His broke in half along the same line mine did.

I also have a Hunter 22 (1984) we noticed when we were in our slip tied-up our keel would "bang or rattle" a lot with motion of the water. Two years ago when I pulled the boat for the winter while sitting on our trailer, the keel was about 2 inches above the center bunk. I got under the boat and to my suprise was able to move the keel from side to side quite a bit! Went on the posts that Mel 22 talks about, I was able to raise the boat enough to unbolt and get the keel out. I found the nylon bushings were all wobbled-out/the pin had a little wear/had a little fiberglass repair to do where the bushings are held in the keel. Went to a local machine shop, had two new brass bushings, and a stainless steel pin made for around $75. (Boat in fresh water only) I was able to re-install the keel with the boat on the trailer-fairly easy job! Good Luck.

I'm the "other user" that 'inarathree' mentions above. My history (with some pix included) is in the "Need Rudder and swing keel dimensions" discussion thread. I've removed my keel 3 times in the past 3 years while on the trailer in my driveway. I'll be ordering a new Foss Foam (Fla) swing keel this offseason. My pivot rod and bushing were lost when the keel failed.

WRT the rod and bushing, I replaced mine with a smooth SS rod obtained from my local True Value hardware store, and the bushing was of nylon ordered from off the web. Both cut to length by me with a grinding wheel and table saw, respectively.
