Many thanks for all the previous information. I have sorted those problems now. Here is a new one for you. I have a 2003 Bavaria 36 which has a raised pad just aft of the anchor locker on deck, where I usually attach the downhaul for the spinnaker pole. Being fed up with the sagging pathetic shape of the half rolled genoa, especially beating to windward, I would like to have an inner forestay to fly a flat blade type sail. Has anybody tried this, is the pad thick enough/strong enough to support the bottom end of a forestay?? Getting at the under deck side of the raised pad seems pretty impossible as the bulkhead at the forward end of the fore cabin and the bulkhead at the aft end of the anchor well totally enclose it, I wouldn't want to destroy those to get underneath the deck pad. Any ideas?? thanks Alan

Aceess from the forward cabin bulkhead

Alan, Taking out the forward bulkhead is fairly straight forward. I did it last spring to install an anchor windlass and pressure water system in the anchor well. The white caps pop off exposing the wood screws that hold the panels in place. I took all of the screws out and then carefully removed the right panel and then the left. Hardest thing is getting the right bend to move the panels past each other and breaking the sealant loose at the top. Once you have one panel off, the other one has plenty of space to pull out. There is a lot of room under the anchor well and forward of the the water tank. If I remember correctly there is a plywood bulkhead (3/4"or 1" thick) that you could bring attaching hardware down to from the pad you are talking about. If you figure this out, pls let me know since I am thinking of doing the same thing. Tom s/v Spiced Rhumb Solomon's Island, MD

Backing plate, preferably with "sandwiched" ply

Yer bud Tom is right. Do not rip the deck off, use a backing plate with a treated wood inside, washers and nylocks too. Further, you cannot just put a baystay anywhere you like either. If the angle of attack isn't too bad, say three feet inside the forestay, then it is 'likely' alright if you run it to the mast head to tie to the tang/hound there, but if not to the top (where your forestay is now, unless you have a fractional, but quite doubtful) then you need either, jumpers or running backs.

Inner forestay in a Bavaria 31

Alan, I am going to install a inner forestay in my Bavaria 31. Some friends told me that a good solution was to use the raised pad just aft of the anchor locker and run it to the mast and tie to the tang/hound there (below the second spreader). Cal
