Inline fuse

Hi everyone,

I a little trepidatious about busting into the electrical system. It’s a super simple 18’ boat, but I know nothing.
I bought a book, and I’m working through some stuff, this doesn’t seem to be in the book.

Anyway - I installed a new stereo, stereo works great, but now the VHF doesn’t work.
My wild guess was somehow I blew a fuse when installing the stereo (more obvious choice is I made a bad connection, but I’m fairly confident with the connections).

I‘m assuming that the thing in the picture is an inline fuse holder? I’m also assuming I’m supposed to be able to open it up to replace the fuse, but having tried to get it open, now I’m guessing you just replace the whole thing?

thanks in advance,

john

White thing is the fuse holder. Normally push and twist to open it.
The tube type fuse is inside,
Jim...

PS: You can test the fuse and on the ends is the replacement size.

By pushing and twisting I can make it tighter and looser, but I can’t seem to get it open.

I agree they can be difficult the first time. You might try using a very small screwdriver or pick to push the tabs inward enough to release the tube from the cover.

It's a bit like a childproof pharmaceutical bottle, but it does open. You should be able to tell if the fuse is intact by looking at the filament. But you can also confirm it with a multimeter, continuity checker, or even a battery and a flashlight bulb.

When you’ve twisted it to the loosest position pull it apart in the direction of the wires - turn from loose to tight should only be about a quarter turn. Then pull. -push, twist, pull.

difficult to find but here is an image of one open. If you zoom in you will see two tabs that slide into the slots that then rotate to lock it shut.

Time to break out your multimeter, or buy one if you haven’t already. It’ll quickly pay for itself in troubleshooting time saved. Start testing points in the circuit to see where the power stops.
