My H32 has 700 hours on the GM 2 cylinder diesel. I continue to get a soot build-up on the ster, owing in part to the flawed design of the exhaust exiting underwater. Would cleaning the injectors help? How big a deal is it? Thanks.

soot is unburned fuel occuring as droplets during combustion. That occures for a veriety of reasons only one of them being dirty injectors.
Does the motor run OK?
The most frequent cause is an engine operating at lower RPM than designed due to higher than design load. The same thing happens when a truck accelerates or goes uphill. Probably a dirty bottom (heavy load/accelerating) or you may be over propped (going uphill in the wrong gear)
Does it happen all the time or just occasionally?
Course it is a diesel and it could be the case that it is all normal.

My 2001 H-290 always had soot on the rear stern exit of the exhaust but I did take the mixing elbo off and I cleaned it out real good and the engine ran better than new but still had soot but not as much.

At 700 hours the likley culprits are a dirty bottom causing the engine to labour, being over propped and finally the mixing elbow. I get nasty black soot from the exhaust when I goose it in reverse as the Kiwi prop I have folds fully out in reverse, overloading the motor.
