Hi Guys,

Getting ready for the next season.

I'm replacing the injectors on my 1983 Yarnmar 2GM. I've got the old injector out and the uppor part of the conbustion chamber removed. The pics below show the bottom of the removed injector, the engine with the injecto removed and the top of the chamber still in place. (It came right out). I also include a pic of the inside of the top part of the injection chamber. I don't know how to get the bottom part of the combstion chamber and the ttwo copper washers out.

Any advice would be much appreciated...

Thanks,

On Hold in Greenlawn.......

Spray some WD40, let it soak then bend a small hook on steel wire to pull out the pieces. I think it may work.

Why do the combustion chamber and washers need to come out? I'd like to start working on the injectors on my 3GM30, but I've held off starting the job because I just don't feel that I thoroughly understand the process.

Robert,

On the yanmar there are copper washers and upper and lower parts of the pre combustion chamber that sit below the injector. When a mechanic replaces the injectors he will inspect the upper and lower chambers and replace them if necessary. As long as I have the injectors out and the injector assemblies apart I'm replacing the upper and lower chambers and washers just in case. I ordered the parts in advance. If I hadn't and one or several were bad I'd have to order them anyway and wait for the parts to be shipped. The total is about $110 in parts and as long as I have the unit apart I figure why not replace them all.... No one ever said owning a sail boat was an economic decision.....

Like Ken says, a little WD or some PB blaster .. let it sit a day or so.. Be careful not to scratch the washer seat in the head.
Be careful of spraying/dripping PB Blaster around any seals or gaskets - I hear it breaks them down.

I guess that makes sense. The previous owner of my boat allowed the vented loop to drip salt water on the head of my 3GM30 for years, leaving it an ugly rusty mess, so if/when I do tackle this job, I'm also planning to replace the injector mounting studs and retainers, along with all the fuel lines and brackets. I'm expecting the injectors to be corrosion-welded into the head, which is one reason I haven't tried to remove them yet.

I read on another thread that a good way to get those lower pieces out of the injector bores is to run an appropriately sized tap from your tap and die set down through them. You might consider that if you can't extract them with a pick. My only concern would be the possibility of creating metal cuttings that could drop down into the cylinders.
