Information needed on my first sailboat.

I am new to sailing and new to the forum, and I am looking for information on my new project.

I have been interested in a small daysailer for a while. A friend of mine has a brother that had an old sailboat, so we went to look at it. It has been growing moss under oak trees for quite a while. Structurely it looks good, but it needs a lot of TLC.

My friend told me he thought it was a 14' yacht trainer. From what I have determined, I believe it is an O'day 15. OAL is 14'11", beam is 5'11''. Mast height is 22'7", boom is 8'10". It is an Orange gel coat with a white deck. There are no storage bins or openings in the front of the deck. There is a lidded storage compartment across the back of the boat. The serial plate on the back shows "O'Day Corporation", "Fall River Mass". The hull # is 22874 and the class is # 2.

If anyone can give me some background or information on the boat, it would be greatly appreciated.

I will get some together this weekend. I am going to try to set up the mast and sails to see what kind shape they are in as well. The sails are good, just not sure about all of the rigging yet.

Thanks for the info. I am thinking that mine must be an older one. I have seen where it says they were first built in the early 70's and then I have seen where they were built in the early 80's. I wonder if they may have been re-introduced with the updated deck in the 80's.

Is there any way to determine the age by the hull number ?

Absolutely. Someone may chime in on how to do that with the plate on your boat. It's different numbering than they used on mine.

Of interest was this:

The mystery of the Hull# / Class # is solved by the fact that O'Day originally gave each boat 2 numbers, The Hull # was the "serial#" based on how many TOTAL boats O'Day had built, and Class# was based on how many of that class had been built. Example, a Day Sailer with Hull# 1234 and class # 1203 would have been the 1234th O'Day boat built, and the 1203rd Day Sailer. O'Day Hull# 1235 may have been a Widgeon or a Rhodes 19 or a Mariner.
All this changed when the USCG required Hull I.D. Numbering system went into effect on 01 November, 1972.
After that date (and O'Day may have started sooner?) all boats had a 12 digit HIN, and the last 2 digits are the last 2 digits of the model year.

If that is true, Class #2 would be a very special boat.

hull # is 22874 and the class is # 2
I'd place the build year as early 1970, and it would appear that this is the 2nd O'DAY 15 built.

The 1980's O'DAY 15 is a completely different boat, it had a daggerboard and was a bit narrower and had seats in the cockpit. Interesting to note that the newer 15 only had stowage in the bow. I have added 3 pics of the 1980's model, and one (red boat) of the 1970's model.

If you hull #2, that is a very special find and boat. If it is in good shape for restoring, you really have something worth bragging about.

Congrats on the find.

We did a little clean up today and got everything sorted out. Everything was in pretty good shape considering how long it had been sitting. We are going to need some odds and ends as far as the rigging goes, but nothing major.

Hey, no problem and thanks. As far as including pics, there is a button on the toolbar when you are composing a post to "Insert Image". After that the process is slightly esoteric but gets easier with practice.

That does look to be in great shape. You have the dagger board? Everything else seems to be in place.

Oh, to upload a pic its 'Attachments", not "Insert image" like I said before.
