Check the 37c archives

Steve, There's loads of articles on the 37c on this site. Check the archives. But typical problems mentioned for the 37c involve possible deck delamination around the dorades; leaking toerails and chainplates (check for bulkhead damage) and port lights, and leaking holding tanks. Some 37c owners feel the thru-hull for the rudder stock is also a weak point, so check that area well. I'd personally check the scupper hoses and all other hoses and fittings anywhere near the waterline for integrity, as well as the type and condition of thru-hulls. The engine bolts had pulled loose on my 37c with its Yanmar 3Qm30 engine, so you might want to check the condition and security of the engine mounts and bolts. Naturally, you'll want to check all the stuff that a good surveyor would as a matter of routine, but the above items are frequently mentioned in posts to this site. Good luck. Walt G.

Walt said it and he. . . .

has a lot of experience. Just to reiterate, a good surveyor is key. My survey was mostly minor items, things like "that hose is chafing". Moisture in the cabin top/sides and deck is numero uno. When I removed my portlights the wood in the cabinsides was very damp. Make sure you understand the waste holding system. If the original tank(under the shower seat) is still in use then know that you will soon be replacing it. If it's already been replaced then see if it was done right. Get a price reduction if original or done poorly. If you have the choice(and the water) be sure to opt for the fin keel and the biggest motor. Believe me, I know since I own a shoal draft with the 2-cylinder. There are 24 for sale on YachtWorld(Link below).

Hull design?

Not sure I understand Steve. In my previous post I wrote that you should go for the fin keel if you have the water for it. It's a problem here on Lake Erie. There were only ever two hulls. The shoal draft has a "less deep" keel(4' draft) but it is longer fore to aft and it is heavier. Most will say that the fin keel boat(5'1") will point higher. Mine seems to do fine but I don't sail with the rail underwater. :)

Steve, I've got some information that may help on my web page. It's more upgrades and repairs, but if you look at the repairs, you'll be able to see what was wrong that caused the need, and my help you in your search. It's at: http://www.geocities.com/thetropics/cabana/7414/upgrades.html Feel free to email with questions. Gene Gruender, rainbowchaser@ev1.net
