I'm interested in buying a 302.....Any problems with that model? Anything I should look for? Are they under powered? Thanks, George.....

O'Day 302 Under Powered?

Not entirely sure what you mean. Engine at easy 2800 rpm gives you 5 knots in calm water. Any opposing wind starts to reduce this due to high freeboard. Last fall we got caught out in 40kt winds. Coming into an anchorage we were only doing 2 knots dead against the wind (in flat water) but I wasn't pushing the engine flat out. As far as sails, for cruising it is just fine, its a very light boat for its size and thus picks up to 4 - 5.5 knots in light breezes easily. In heavier winds we easily did 6.5 knots under close haul. On a downwind in 20+knots wind, it started to round up at 7.4 knots under full sail. It would be fun to have an acre of sail to haul up as you probably get some extra excitement but we really only family cruise the boat and thus don't need the hassles of constant adjustments to the sails. Regards and good luck

plenty of power

Ijust bought a 1987 302 and took it from haverstraw ny to mystic ct. I think it is powered just about right. It will do about 6.5 knots at 2800 rpm. The Yanmar 2gm20f engine ran like a top. Good luck
