Anyone spend any time on Lake Wallenpaupak in northeast Pennsylvania? A relative just bought a place nearby and there's a marina that rents sailboats. Was wondering if the sailing is any good there and would be worth the trip and the money. I was there several times as a teenager, but my mind was on other things... and not on the wind.

I was there several times in the past few years. The sailing is not bad-if you don't get run over by a powerboat. The first time I sailed there was with my 18' daysailer. It was very choppy but not impossible to deal with. The last time I was there, I rented a precision 19 from a marina. Had a great time as it was during the middle of the week and the week-end cigarette boat drivers weren't out. There was a bit more wind but considerably less chop(could it be because there were less near misses from high speed boats?). I haven't been there with my current V21, but when I brought my own boat I used Walt's marina, which seemed reasonably priced at the time.

Lake Wallenpaupak

My wife and I owned a weekend house on Lake Wallenpaupak for 22 years. When we lived in Manhattan, my wife and kids spent the entire summer there and we have lots of fond memories. I had a Triton 21 sailboat for 5 years. The sailing was pretty good, however, as Bruce mentioned the weekends were brutal due to the crowded conditions. Also, there were lots of times in the middle of the summer when there was little wind. When we moved to Westchester County I moved the sailboat to the L.I. Sound and bought a 19 foot runabout for the lake. My son really liked water skiing and tubing. We sold the house last year and used the money to upgrade to a larger sailboat. I miss Lake Wallenpaupak and hope to bring my grandchildren up there some day. I still have the runabout on my driveway, my son uses it with his friends to waterski on Candlewood Lake (another lake that's unbearable on the weekends!)

I grew up on Lake Wallenpaupack sailing and water skiing. As a previous post mentioned the weekends are brutal, however during the week is good. There are no long runs for a sailboat, you will tack on a regular basis. Water depth is good.
