Hobie 16 Lake Monroe
I have sailed Hobies all my life but have been interested in owning a monohull. I spotted a 1981 Hunter 22' today that has been in indoor storage since 1999. It was abandoned by the owner and now is for sale by the owner of the storage facility where it was stored. They do have the title for the boat. He was asking $2500.00 and said he would take $2,000.00. They want to get ride of it so I might get it for less. It is on a tandom axle trailer with the rollers, surge brakes and good tires but no motor. I know nothing about sailing this type of boat but would love to have one ...I think so I can sail in the spring and fall in the Midwest. I have a dually pickup so hauling it isn't a problem. I didn't inspect the cabin or sails which I plan to do. NADA has them valued at $5,000+ for retail. What can you all tell me about the Hunter 22 pros and cons and value. Anything I should look for as a warning of future problems. Is this a great deal or ???. I know it isn't going to fly like a Hobie 16 but I am 64 and have had both knees replaced so Hobie sailing probably isn't in my future for long. I am retired so I have time to sail whenever the wind blows. Thanks!

I just recently bought a 1981 H22. It had been sitting on a lake for a couple years. There was no trailer, so had to find one and fit it to the boat. Bought the boat for $2175, nice aluminum trailer for $1800, spent $500 fitting trailer to boat. I tell you this because I don't know the TRUE value of this package, just what I have invested and am VERY pleased. Have only had time to sail her twice, but she handled just great.

She has a Mariner 8hp outboard that pushes her at hull speed. This boat is simple with no electronics to speak of and only one throughhull to keep check on.

In your case: Since the boat is on rollers and they compress such a small area, I would look for deflection of the hull and any resulting cracks. (I hauled mine 200 miles and let it sit for a month on nearly square wooden bunks while I got the bunk material together and that caused some indentions and a small crack in the hull that I repaired) Check those trailer tires very closely for dry rot if they have been sitting for ten years. We moved up from a Zuma 13. I'm 58 and I miss the speed but like the space and overnight anchoring.

Do a search and you'll find some posts re: the pros/cons of the 22. We had one for a couple of years and really enjoyed it. It is large for a 22 with a large cockpit and a really nice V berth. Check the area around the mast plate to be sure it is not sagging. Check the teak strips in the cabin for signs of leakage from the toerail. Also, the cockpit drains are a bit odd. Crawl to that area from inside the boat and check the hoses for splits or poor routing. If they are damaged, water from the cockpit will find its way into the boat. Otherwise, get a friend who is familiar with keel boats to go over it with you.

Royalstar, I bought a 85 h22 with a fixed keel last year. I had a great time on it. I wound take it out 3 or 4 times a week. I got it up to 6.6mph under sail a few times,7 with motor. Mine set for 3 years so I had to put 4 new tires and wheels on it ($450). The rollers and bottom of boat were both fine. I think it is a nice boat.

P.s. I hope the name Royalstar doesn't stand for Yamaha. I am a Harley man. Enjoy your boat.

Royalstar, I just noticed you are at Monroe. That is where my boat is at.
