Hi, I would like to replace the transom on my caribe hypalon dingy. The wooden transom is damaged beyond repair (hit by a car) and needs to be removed and replaced. The fabric is still in good shape. If anyone has tried this and has advise for me I would be grateful. The cost of having it done by a pro is more than the boat is worth so I'm going to try to do it myself. Thanks, Rob Gallagher 1972 C&C 30MK1 "TRYSAIL" Noank, CT

Not Good

When I was looking to buy a tender I bought a book on inflatables. It said the area around the transon could not be repaired economically and if there was damage or leaks there then forget buying the boat. I know this doesn't help much but I turned down a inflatable just on what the book recommended.

what part of the transom?

Rob, what part of the transom is damaged? and to what extent? do you need to replace the whole transom?..if the damage is local.than you might try routing out the damaged area,,cut a new insert section use a biscut joiner and glue in a number of biscuts for support..glue with water proof glue....then I would glass over.....if the transom is completly shot.the attachment to the Hypalon is a tricky situation at best. Good luck

Bisquit

The transom is broken along the hypalon flap that is glued to the wood. I am starting to come around to the idea that the wood itself must be repaired. I don't think I can get the Transom out and back in without damaging the boat. If anyone has a similar problem, email me and I will keep you updated on how the repair works out. Thanks, Rob

How about a factory repair?

Have you contacted a dealer to see if this can be fixed professionally, perhaps at the factory (I odn't know where they are made - could be the Dominican Republic, unfortunately). I'd love to know, jv
