Has anyone done some research into the features and quality of the inflatable flotation vests. I would like to pick up a couple at the end of season sales or boat show but don't want to make a mistake as they seem to vary quite a bit in price. Are the expensive ones really worth it?

Inflatable PFDs

Check out Practical Sailor's reviews of PFD's. The've done several and are very informative.

August 2008 and April 2006. Great info.

good as a harness, but...

I purchased four inflatables about ten years ago, and use them whenever I feel it's necessary to tether myself to the boat. Usually only offshore when I've run the jacklines. Of course, you have to buy the ones with the D-rings for them to be of any use as a harness.

Whenever I'm bay sailing, which is most of my sailing, I prefer to use my high-end kayak vest. It's actually more comfy than the inflatable, especially if you're going to be sailing more than a couple of hours. I'm noticing that a lot of local racers have moved in the same direction over the course of the past five years.

Re: good as a harness, but...

I bought from West Marine and like it much better than a Type III vest. Depending on the type of sailing you do, I would recommend spending a little extra and getting one that has the built-in harness so you can clip into the boat. I use this feature when sailing solo, at night, and during rough weather.

After reading and reasearch online I settled on the Mustang line. Bought two with harness and auto inflate. Very happy with my choice. Not the cheapest on the market but I believe worth the price.

I've used the SOSpenders brand since before they were Coast Guard approved over 15 years ago. They are still working well and are tested every year (by manual inflation). Make sure you get auto inflate and built-in harness. No sense in cutting corners here and you'll never regret it. Remember, they only work if you wear them!
