just purchasing a 10 ft air floor inflatable- can handle an 8 hp outboard- have a question as to how i get the outboard off of the rail mount and safely onto the inflatable. seems a bit tricky being that the motor weighs about 55 lbs- this is when we are anchored and the inflatable is in the water alongside. any hints ? thx jim

Crane

Install a crane. It will handle the load and help to keep the crew steady in the dink while it is mounted and de-mounted.

Boom

I use a rope vang (6:1) off the back of the boom. With the dinghy alongside the boat and the boom angled off to the side, the motor can be lowered straight down to the transom of the dingy. You still have to lift the motor over the lifelines but it is always attached to either the boat or the dinghy. Doing this has gotten easier each time.

Garhauer Motor Davit

Check out the Garhauer Web site. They sell a beautiful portable davit for about $200. It includes a 6:1 pully system. We can easily and safely install or revoe the 8 HP outboard that mount on the stern rail.

Work out!

My friend drops the motor on his deck and then gets in the ding. He then slides into the ding via the walk through transon.

smaller engine

Just because it will take an 8 doesn't mean you need an 8. 2 strokes are lighter than 4 strokes. Keep the safety cable attached to the stern rail - get a longer safety cable if you need to. Keep the dinghy near the swim ladder.
