I am getting ready to launch the new dink this weekend. It is a Mercury Ocean Runner 290. What works well to apply registration numbers to a PVC RIB? Stencils and paint, number board, adhesive numbers on the boat itself? I know, I know, I should have bought a Hypalon RIB but it was practically free.

Paint

I thought I read some where that the numbers now in New York or everywhere else have to be painted on the dinghy, some thing about homeland security ( crap). I have a perfictly good number board on my RIB now, and have to change to paint, hope next year they don't want engraved #'s on the inflatables

Which paint?

Everyone I have spoken to regarding paint said that it doesn't last very long. Maybe they are using the wrong paint.

wish that were true Tim

I painted the reg numbers on our dinghy 8 years ago and it ran along the edges of some of the stencils making an ugly mess which I am still reminded of every day I look at it.

I used a Sharpie marker and stencils a couple

years ago and it's holding up well but the dink is stored out of the weather. Clumsy (or inebriated) friends seem destined to sink number boards when entering or leaving your dink while other boards just seem to disappear. I've had poor luck gluing anything to a dink, but then I use a roll-up and it's the inflating and uninflating that breaks things loose quick.

was afraid you'd ask that...

Tim As I said, it was 8 yrs ago and I often can't recall what I had for breakfast. The only recollection I have is that the paint came in a kit along with the stencils and was bought at West Marine. I believe they still sell such a kit but don't know if it contains the same paint. I had previously tried all the other options, boards, decals, etc and nothing ever remained permanent until now.

Fair enough Don

They must have cheaped out on the paint as those are the kits I have heard so many bad things about.

www.boatnumberplate.com I've tried plates and paint and have been unhappy with each. Two years ago I ordered and applied a glue on plate from this website and I have been very happy. Buy good quality glue and follow the prep very carefully and you will have a professional result that will last as long as your boat. Tim

Sharpie and home made stencil

Essentially free, no issues, Coasties happy, I touch up the letters occasionally freehand with a Sharpie I keep aboard. Takes less than ten minutes annually.

Be careful with the painting

and Sharpie techniques. In California at least, the dink's registration sticker needs to be afixed in a specific location that, depending on the boat, may be difficult to ensure. If you paint or draw the numbers on, according to CA DMV you gotta put be sure that: "On inflatable boats or vessels so configured that a number will not properly adhere or cannot be clearly seen, the number should be painted on or attached to a backing plate along with the registration sticker. The registration stickers must be securely affixed 3 in. aft of, and in line with, the registration numbers." In my experience, the problem getting the reg numbers to stay on a PVC dink, (and in the proper place if the reg numbers are drawn or painted on) is greater than that of the just putting the damn numbers on. The DMV sticker WILL NOT attach to the PVC, so some type of plate is needed. I couldn't find a sticker plate that would attach to the PVC either, so I made up a plate that the sticker would afix to, and tied the plate to my dink's handhold lines, so it was more or less in line with the reg numbers. I got stopped and inspected/boarded by the Sheriff on my main vessel, and he looked at the dink I was towing as well. He didn't cite me for it, but commented that he couldn't be sure that when underway, my plate with the sticker, since it floated separately from the numbers painted on the hull, would always be 3" from and in line with, the numbers. (Personally I just think he was pissed off and having a bad day, but "Buyer Beware"!) Peter

I have a number board...

I picked up at port Harbor Marine in Raymond. It had holes in it... zip tied it to the line that runs along the side... applied some vinyl snowmobile numbers. Don't worry about the Hypalon thing... we don't live down south. It will be fine the 14 good days we call summer. Figured if I ever tried to sell it... it would be worth more without numbers plastered all over it. If I had to do over... I would go down to MaineSails shop and make a number board of teak plywood with 10 coats of varnish and white lettering!

Seems like a simple thing, what a pain in the @$$!

When I went to launch the new dink I allowed about a 1/2 hour to put numbers on it along with the new date sticker. I went yo WM figuring on picking up some vinyl number, stick them on and off I go, HAH! After looking at all of the options painting seemed easiest. I bought the stencils, and the plates on which to put the date stickers. Went out to the parking lot only to find out that I needed a marker to trace the stencils and the paint kit did not include a paint brush. I figured ok lets at least glue the date plate on. I opened the package and started reading the instructions. I needed hypalon glue to coat the plate first and it needs 8hrs to dry before you can apply PVC glue to glue it on. What a PITA, I just wanted to get into the water before dark. So I decided to return everything, and buy the number plate and vinyl stickers (the WM guy was not as friendly as my first visit). It took about 45 min to get the numbers on just right. Zip tied the plate to the boat and off I went 2 hrs later. I now know why they charge $29 for a set of those plastic plates. Frank BTW couldn't get the motor started and ended up rowing around Dana Harbor anyway, could have done that without all of the grief.

I just stick the DMV registration sticker to

the cowling on the engine, I know it's not according to the book but it's not been a problem. I'll keep me head down if I ever have to dink past the $%^&* sherrif in Stockton tho'.

State Stickers...where?

We all know what a problem it is to put registration numbers on an inflatable. Numberboards could technically be illegal because they can be detached from the boat. Stenciled numbers seem to be the only logical way to go, but that still leaves the problem of what to do with the state stickers. They simply won't adhere. I've seen them on motor cowlings, and in some cases one state sticker on the outside of the transom on the starboard side, and inside the transom on the port side, and vice versa. It seems that the states should get together and write addendums to their registration rules that would provide suitable alternatives for inflatables.

That's what I was talking about Doug they do sell a small square

plate for the Reg sticker, but it has to be coated with Hypalon glue first. Once coating has dried you can put PVC glue and stick it to the boat. The sticker goes on that. With the plate the sticker just goes on that with the numbers. Frank
