I have found a Yanmar engine for $1900 new. heres the specks: 16 HP YANMAR DIESEL ENGINE New YANMAR 3TN66 diesel engine. Three cylinders, cast iron block. Includes muffler, 12 VDC starter, 12 VDC 15 Amp alternator with voltage regulator and fuel filter. Mechanical speed governor. SPECIFICATIONS * YANMAR model 3TN66 * 16 Hp * 3,600 RPM max. * 3 cylinders * 9-1/2" diameter flywheel * Overall size 16-1/2" x 15-1/2" x 20-1/2" * Shpg. 225 lb I have received a quote for a new marine transmission plus a adapter plate for $1500. I know it will need a marine muffler plus a water heat exchanger, both i can get good used cheap at my local marine salvage yard, what else would be required to marinize this motor? I’m trying to add up if it would be worth it or not..

its not worth it.

The problem is by the time you get it together you could spend a little more and have a great upgrade. this way you will have a converted engine with different alloys and a used cooling system, that wont last. Sure it can be done. and dont forget the raw water pump hoses, muffler hose engine mounts a custom bed and it may not fit the boat when you are done.

Marine diesel

If you replacing an older Yanmar Ysb/YSE/YSM look at the Vetus motors, the motor mount footprint is exactly the same, and that alone will save you a ton of money, not having to rebed the motor. A new Vetus 3 cyl/ 25 HP is $5300.00 delivered in New England free

Bigger alternator

DJ - Neat little engine. 15 amps isn't going to provide much charging capacity though. I've got 35 amps and though it will keep up with modest electrical loads, I can't add a small 12v fridge without running the engine 4-5 hrs per day, which isn't very realistic in a sail boat. You should probably aim for 50 amps minimum. I'm guessing that engine was designed for a reefer ( refrigerated trailer) : is the throttle & governor amenable to operating at varying speeds from idle to max ? What about access for oil changes ? Instrumentation hook up ? Lots of little things, and those nickels & dimes can add up quickly. Good luck.

ya, much bigger alternator

I figured i pick up a large alternator and add a pulley capable of running it where the fan it now. I am figuring a larger 90 amp alternator for major charging duty with good fuel efficiency... Ill have to call them and ask if the throttle is variable. This is why i always hash stuff out on paper first, 75% of all my ideas are impractical but, the 25% left over..! :) Someone mentioned the motor alloy, from all the info i can find the marine model and the industrial model are the same except external hardware, anyone know of any other differences?

Diesel conversion

The marinization of my Isuzu included a heavy duty flywheel and transfer plate, required for marine duty (like running into a seawall at 6 kts.) The engine was designed to be converted, and the kit made by Isuzu (except the heat exchanger), and was a couple of kilobucks less than the comparable Yanmar.
