I have a Yanmar 3GM30. Last time it was run was for about 30 minutes, 2 years ago. It was shut down (didn't sieze up). Crank will not turn with starter nor breaker bar with socket. Short of a full overhaul, is there anything I can check/do myself before taking on a second job to pay a mechanic to tell me I need a new engine?

Jim:

Have you tried turning the engine over with the compression levers open?

Can you tell if the starter is in proper working order?

Be sure that you have a good battery too.

Starter works, batteries new. Crank won't turn even with a breaker bar on it (didn't try too hard..heard that would be bad to break it loose that way). Have agonized over this, and with limited mechanical knowledge, I assume that either:

-engine seized
-stuck in gear and transmission is 'stuck' (technical term eludes me)

check and make sure you dont have any fluid in the cylinders....if you do.... get it out of there...cuz that will make it act like a hydrolic ram and will not let you turn it over .....if you find none in there then you may have had water in there over the time when you shut it down especially if you left the water intake open.... and now causing rust in the cylinders....if so..... put some marvel mistry oil in the cylinders and let it soake for a day or 2 and then slowley take a breaker bar and socket on the pully end of the crank shaft and move it back and fourth till you get some movement but dont use brut force...just go slow and take your time.....and dont worry if it is in worse shape than you think ...after all its an engine and some one made it to begain with...and i am sure it can be fixed in due time ....and some detective work...just go slow......

Hey Jim, sounds like exactly what I'm going through. Get a service manual and start dismantling. I tried and tried to pull the injectors, but in hind site should have just pulled the head in the beginning.

Here's a link to the 3 page thread of my 3 weeks or so of trying to get it going before deciding on pulling it to do a complete rebuild.

Don't hesitate to PM or email me and I'll give you my #. These motors are super simple to work on!

Good luck and let us know
