Do you suppose the diver mechanic had the ignition keys in his pocket ?
Or better yet did he lock out and tag out the starter batteries ? I'd be my luck that half way thru the job the boat owner would start the enginge to let it warm up so it would be ready when I was finished.
Well, for one, the diver was me. For another, the owner was not aboard. If he had been and had started the engine without asking me first, we'd have had some words. But honestly, in the 20,000+ underwater service events I have performed, I can count the number of times that has happened on maybe two fingers. It's pretty tough not to know a diver is under your boat when his dinghy is parked in front of it and his tools are lined up on the dock on either side of the slip. Plus, in this business, I might service 8 or 10 boats in a day. Getting the keys and going aboard each one to lock out the batteries is just not practical.
