In reading through the posts it seems many sailors have cut an access to the mast wiring at the base of the mast. How does this affect the masts structural integrity? Also, does anyone have a good method of making this access for a Hunter 33.

What I did...

I considered an access panel in the base of the mast. I'm not a structural engineer so I decided against anything so foolish. I did come up with one solution however. I don't use the port side lower sheeves. After thinking it over I decided I probably never will, but if in the future I must, I could fabricate a replacement bracket for the sheeves. So I removed the sheeves, then got out my dremel tool. I cut out the sides of the bracket that holds the sheeves (the base is welded down so I left it). Then I could reach inside and pull my wires down and out. After making the repairs I needed I replaced the wires. A piece of scrap aluminum cut to size, painted, and screwed in place makes a removable cover plate for the access hole. If I ever do need to install another halyard I'll bring it out the mast about 5' up on the port side, and add another mast winch (I have the same setup on the starboard side for the jib). This works for me, might work for you. Dale
