I am looking for some measurements of a trailer for a 1975 H27. Or photos of the trailer or the boat on the trailer that I can scale. Can anyone help me with this info?

Trailer Information

If you can give me a couple of days I can supply you with the dimensions of the trailer I bought and refit to get my 1980 Cherubuni 27 from the yatch club to my home. Distance wasn't all that great but I was told after the trip by the tow truck operator that the boat and trailer travelled well.

Total distance travelled was approximately 15 miles but I'm sure that with the right tow vehicle it would be no problem to go a much greater distance.

Stand by for the measurements, including tiresize etc. Will also forward some pix of the cradle trailer combo.

Trailer Measurements

Here are the measurements of the trailer I have for my 1980 Hunter 27.

Width = 80 inches

Length = 142 inches

Corners of the trailer are reinforced both top and bottom with 1/4" steel plates

Tongue Length = 92 inches (Meaured from the front of the frame to the tip if the 2.5 inch ball hitch)

Tires = 8-14 Goodyear Light Truck

Box Frame is 2" x 4" tubing

Tongue is 4" x 4" tubing double stacked to minimize flex. Tongue is extended at approximately a 35 degree angle to each side of the trailer as it reaches the frame.

Pictures to follow when my camera thaws out. Minus 28 degrees with the wind chill today.

Axles and wheels were purchased used from a mobile home mover. Originally were used on a 12' x 40' mobile home. Should be easy enough to locate same in your area.
Front wheels of trailer are equipped with electric brakes.

Your throughts would be appreciated

I have an H-27 and have been storing it in a year for years. It now costs $1,800 per winter plus a $250 power fall wash down (mandatory) and another $400 for bottom painting in the spring (they no longer let owner do so the work because the grade school dropouts who can't even read the directions on the can are more careful and better trained than me.) I live less than 5 miles from the hauling point and have been considering a trailer for winter storage. it would make work on the boat must easier too!!!!!. I've plenty of room on my property but have always worried about the relative costs of stepping the mast, hauling the boat and coordinating the entire shebang. I assume you have to be there when they haul it I even have the days off from work to be there but....
I don't have a truck but do hae access to a large SUV and a large pickup both with trailer rigs....

Have you thought of all the details...

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this...

I have been towing my H22 for a few years now. Each fall and spring the marina uses the travel lift to load/unload the boat from the trailer, though half the weight and 5' shorter, it has given me some experience. I am faced with similar costs for winter storage, though my main reason for hauling the boat home is to work on her. It is a 2 hour round trip to the marina. A 2 minute walk out back. The oversize permit will cost 55.00 for CT and RI combined. The trailer will wnd up costing 1200-1600. I have a friend with a 1 ton dually truck. Mast step/unstep is 130 each time. I figure that the first season I will break even.

Trailer

We put in and haul here with a crane in spring and fall and yes you hve to be there at the marina when they work is being done. Although the cost of storage at the club is not prohibitive, I also live 15 miles from the yard and having the boat next to the house is great, instead of taking a 20 minute drive you take a two minute walk out the side door of the garage and your there.
Power washer and air compressor are right there and so are all my tools, especially the ones I forget to take to the yard and now own two of because its cheapre to buy another than it is to drive home.
The boat can be hauled with an F350 Ford or GM3500 but even with the electric brakes on the trailer you certainly feel the weight behind you especially on the downhill portions. Better solution is to have a heavy towtruck haul the vehicle home, this should avoid any need for permits and the truck would be equipped with air brakes, much easier to drive behind as the chase vehicle.
At the prices you quote for storage you should be able to get a trailer/cradle combination and break even in a season and a half. Trailer is also a sale point when the day comes to say goodbye to the boat. Pix will be up in a few minutes.

Karl,

I hope you will get a chance to snap the photos. I will be starting work on my trailer soon and am hoping to use them as a guide.

Thanks

I pull my mast and have it hauled by a boat hauler a few miles to the house, $250 ea way. I have thought about a trailer myself, a couple of the guys have them and have a (big) wrecker haul them. I never thought maybe you didn't need brakes on the trailer if you did it that way--it would make things easier. I believe if hauling yourself, you would need brakes on the trailer. 7400#'s is subtaintial.

Karl, trailer photos?

What is your issue on posting of photos Karl? Do you have them loaded on your PC from the camera? I don't think you can load them here from "Quick Reply". If you click on the "Post Reply" box as I just did then below this text entry box you will see a "Upload Photos or Files Here" box. Click on that and find and select your photos from the "Browse" boxes. Then do "Upload" and they should load. There is no real indication that they are finished loading other than seeing the files and sizes in the little load box. Close that box and then "Submit Reply". Hope that helps.

Thanks Ed I'll give it a try that way, I'm certainly not the swiftest individual when it comes to the old computer. Minus 26 here today with the wind chill and a not time to be out in the boat sanding or removing the teak to refinish it. We're doing some upgrades over the winter, new propane stove (Dickinson) and refinishing all the wood work and replacing the counter and chart & dinette table tops before putting Break Away up for sale. Hoping to find a good 37.6 Legend by spring. 15 months now till I pull the pin.
