I've recently had an ahah! moment. For the past year, my original variable pitch prop has NEVER found the "full forward" position. Consequently, I've had to run my poor little 0-22 original engine at far too many revs, and achieving meager knots forward. I've had chronic carbon problems - now seemingly solved. I've found I can get a comfy 4.5 knots at a lovely "pocketa pocketa pocketa . . . " rate on the engine. Most satisfying.
However - I'm now unable to get back to neutral! I don't miss reverse - I don't think anyone has ever liked reverse. But neutral is downright handy.
I feel the need to get into the little transmission box aft of the engine. For some reason, moving the control lever (the one at the reversing transmission - not the one in the cockpit) does not seem to be engaging with the innards - so I can't get back into neutral.
One theory posed to date is that I've got a tooth or two on the small activating gear, that may be damaged or missing. I've heard that merely "inverting" that gear presents "fresh teeth" and I'd be good for another 30 years. Perhaps it's just a screw that needs tightening or a shear pin that's come adrift.
Questions:
1) Is there anyone out there who has had this problem before?
2) Is it possible to access the transmission without putting the boat on shore?
3) Is it at all practical to access the transmission by removing the engine from the front - instead of accessing it from the prop-shaft end? I'd actually like to remove the engine to address a leaking seal on the oil pan, so removing the engine is not without its side benefits.
and 4) Is there anyone out there - anywhere in North America - that has spare components for my little museum-piece project. Any parts from the front of the engine to the prop-blades at the back, would be appreciated.
I'd be happy to hear of any ANY experiences - happy or sad - regarding your "intimate experiences" with the reversing mechanism.
Thanks,
Kevin

p.s. the engine is running pretty fine!
