I bought a new 2009 Beneteau 343 in late 2008 and from day one I had problems with the in-mast furling system. But once I learned a few techniques such as constant tension on the outhaul and furling lines and periodically tensioning the main halyard I managed to have an easy time getting the sail out and back in. I also removed the top vertical batten which probably helped more than anything.

Fast forward to last week when I discovered UV damage to about 6 inches of leech of my main. The only way I can envision this happening is through the slot in the main. It has always been a tight situation and I have noticed that the sail actually bulges out a bit when furled. The UV damage is parallel to the leech. I have asked many people and few have seen such a thing before.

Does anyone have any similar experience? Ideas?

Seems a little bit early for the UV to be damaged. We had that issue on our jib after 10 years, but that made sense given the exposure to sunlight.
Not sure if you bought from a dealer or not, but have you asked them?
What is the warranty period?
Do the sails look new?

furling main issues

I'm still getting used to the furling main on my 1999 381. It would jamb up when deploying the main but have since re worked the out haul to give even pull at the foot of the sail and this gives better sail shape when reefing the main. I'm now getting the boat ready for winter storage and have a question in regards to the furling once the sail has been removed, how do you stop the furling from rattling?, it sure has made some interesting comments from fellow boat owners around my slip. In regards to the main condition it is still in excellent shape and feels crisp to the touch with no signs of UV damage. Any help on the rattling furling would be great

Beneteau dealer said they have heard of such a thing. Same for Neilpryde. Warranty on sail is two years and specifically disclaims uv damage. I am still working with Neilpryde.
I am beginning to conclude that it wasn't uv damage per se. I am betting it is heat damage to the sail cloth. The temp inside the mast in north TX in July and August has gotta be brutal. With the exception of inferior sail cloth, heat damage is all I can figure.

After u drop the main on an in mast furling system attach a line to the shackle that attaches to the head of the sail. While holding onto the line raise the head mechanism by pulling in main halyard. Get the top of the furler at least half way up to stop the banging. Make sure to hold on to the messenger line that is now essentially replacing the main as a tensioner. If u lose the line u will be going aloft to retrieve halyard and furler top.

Thanks for the info I will give it a try but it won't happen till next season for me. I did give it a thought but that is as far as it got. Once again many thanks.
