Was just spring cleaning my boat -H326- and realized when I took the Main and Genoa off the boat as I winterized,I pulled both Halyards all the way back up to mast head....just tried to jiggle them to get them to fall back down so I can get my hands on end of line to get sails back on but had no luck - not budging. A few questions I need help with: 1) What is the proper way to leave Halyards to make for easy sail re-install?...2) more urgent at this time, how can I get the Halyards back down, other than going aloft? 3) If I must go aloft, any suggestions as I have never gone..what is good chair? how much help will I need? Since I will be going up to pull Halyards down, what will I fasten to to get up in the first place? Appreciate any help provided. DMac

Are you in a marina or can you bring another boat alongside?

Going aloft is a touchy-feely thing. I suspect that instructions online will be of limited value and slow in coming. If you can announce your plight to others in your area, you can explain your problem and ask another crew to go up their mast when next to you and retrieve your stuff with a boat-hook. Should work.

For winter storage

I use a length of (junk)rope to allow the jib and main halyards to be fully sent to the top of the mast, then I coil and cover the halyards until spring. I also make sure the lines don't slap anywhere.

How

How are you going to do it safely with the jib halyard and the main halyard up top,the topping lift is the only thing you got. You should not go up without a second backup. Maybe you should bite the bullet this time if you have never done it before and ask around for a guy that does it for a living. How much could he charge you to just get the halyard and next time just make sure you tie them on some thing secure. I ask these questions in case it happens to one of us on this forum. Nick
