Hello all
So I have an in-line strainer in my freshwater prior to the pump. To me it’s a bad choice of strainer because it leaves air at the top of the fitting that causes issues with water flow. This is due to the air that’s within the strainer that cannot be released. I have two options one of which is get a new strainer or the second would be to drill a small hole at the top fit a screw in there with a rubber washer and and release the air and tighten the screw.
Any opinions would be appreciated!

I think you mean raw water strainer.

I've been using those strainers since they were first introduced and always found if there was air in the strainer, there was air coming in from some where up line, or your not getting a good seal on the dome o-ring. Right now I'm running half a dozen, the head intakes (2), watermaker primary intake, sump drain lines (2) and a washdown inlet line. Not one has air in the clear plastic and most are aligned just as yours is.

Yes I agree it should be the other way.... this is the way it was mounted in my boat. Have to modify to get it positioned the correct way. I have others and have had these on other boats and they were all positioned the opposite way so water fills the bowl and air gets pushed out like it should. Like I said bad choice of strainer for the set up at hand... I was just trying to simply modify what I have.

Thanks!

I have 5 of those strainers on my boat. 3 for raw sea(lake) water and 2 for the freshwater tanks. The 2 freshwater tank filters have the base down and the cup/strainer piece on top. The raw water filters hang down. None of them cause any issues. The water tank filters do have some air in them, but that doesn't seem to affect water flow.

Could there be an air leak elsewhere that is causing the pump issues? Also, I put a little silicone grease on the threads makes removing them for cleaning easier.

So back at boat I unscrewed base of strainer and basically spun it half a turn..... presto filled! Just have to put a few supports for hoses etc but changed the sound of pump.....
I used coconut oil on the fresh water strainer threads...... Teflon grease on others.

Thanks all!

I recently replaced an old strainer with that same model. Works fine on my system. Mine is mounted right-side up. No issues that I can tell After using the new strainer for the season.

Just had to ask ........................ why coconut oil ?
Well Teflon grease doesn't sound too good if some leaches into water. The coconut oil lightly on the gasket and threads does the trick for me. Sure you can use tape but what on the gasket??

No, not on the gasket. If you take a look at the teflon grease you are presently using, you may see the letters NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) which means food safe. A lot of teflon grease is used on food equipment. If not, get some Super Lube as it is food safe (and cheap).
