I have an 8HP outboard in my Mac 26S that has battery charging capability. I noticed that the wires running from it to the battery have no fuses. I'd like to install an in-line fuse or equivalent to protect this circuit. Any advice on how many AMPS should that fuse have? Also, would that charging system overflow the battery when fully charged aznd cause problems? Thanx, Albert

Motor Fuses

My 9.9 Yamaha has a fuse (30A) on the motor itself....When putting an inline fise it typically blows due to the loading on start.... I do have a fuse panel and switches for all my lights, radio, DC outlet... I only have the motor fuse protecting the connection to the battery from the outboard....

wire gauge

What size are the wires running from the battery? It should be an indication of what size fuse you should have. For example, a 30 amp fuse will not protect a 12 gauge wire. The wire will burn before the fuse blows. If you want to stay on the conservative side, check out the linked table. Slow blow fuses work best with high start-up loads. You should have a voltage regulator somewhere to prevent overcharging.

5 amsp for an 8 HP??

My old 8 HP Honda manual says it will put out 60W which at 12 volts would be about 5 amps. So you would need say a 10 amp fuse but this is a guess on my part and there may be some standard to reference? Regarding the wire size, if the motor is close the battery, you can go smaller diamter but if the battery is far from the motor, you need larger wires (smaller guage number). However, the only thing you lose by long too small wires is some of your charging power (power loss is the current squared time the resistance of the wire). I dont know what guage the zip chord which comes standard in the boat but while it probably will lose "a little too much" power, Id guess it also wont have any safety issues from using it with 5 amps (like melting). Bobgump, is the 30 amp fuse for an electric start? The elecrtric starting motor would have an inrush current which could blow a fairly large fuse but the charging alternator connected to the battery probably doesnt have this issue. Regarding the voltage regulator, this could be an issue if you run your motor a LOT. But for just occasional use and with smaller motors (like 8 HP), I would think you could get by without one. For example, if your battery is 100 amp hours, running your 8 HP motor for one hour will charge only 5 amp hours. This is only 1/20th of the total battery charge which under some circumstances could cause a problem. If you run the motor for many- many hours and you always keep a full charge on the battery, you would probably want the regulator. What I had planned to do was put in a switch between the motor alternator and the battery and just watch the battery voltage.. I could be wrong here however so be aware. Unfortantely my old 8 HP alternator doesnt work - but I suspect the rectifier diodes are blown.. Another project for later..

Motor Fuse

Yep - The fuse is for the electric start... The wiring to the starter is the only connection.... Once the motor is started I could put an inline fuse but it would blow every start cycle...

blender vs. starting motor...

I was thinking about the 30 amp for the starter later on and was surprized that it is that "small". The reason why.. I have a set up to run a 110 volt blender and this uses a 800 watt inverter which I only connect up when the blender is being used as the inverters running current even without a load is too "wasteful". The blender is about 600 watts. Assuming the inverter is about 90% efficient, the current at 12.5 volts is: 600 watts/.9 = 12.5 * I I = 53 amps! (note that the 800 watt inverter has short thick 12 volt wires) The blender is on for maybe 1.5 minutes so the amp hours used is: 53 amps * 1.5/60 = 1.3 amp hours - really not much at all. The starter motor probably uses less than this.

wasteful?...not

if you are using that blender to make frozen margaritas or something similar :)
