Good morning:

My first post, just picked up the boat. Found a faria sounder with in hull transducer on craigslist, was looking to get an idea of the best place to mount the transducer. P-79 trnasducer, mounts in a cylinder filled with mineral oil that is glued to the hull. Any thoughts? Thank you!!

that's a good idea, I guess the idea being the further forward, the earlier you can detect losing depth. Will make sure of wire length, that it can be run that distance. will give it a shot when she goes into the water. I guess a concern is also the proximity to the keel. will try and keep as far away as possible, the main reason I was going to stay away from mounting forward. But will pack my baggie with water, temporary hookup, and play around with it. Thanks for the response, Peter.

Ditto with placement of transducer. I herad about another method of attachment. Wax. I used those rings used to install toilets. A couple of bucks. You have to make sure there are no air bubbles. Works great and can be easily moved.

I mounted mine under the v-berth forward of the keel as well. I than shaped a piece of plywood and finished it to cover the transducer and protect the wireing. I store my boat tool box right on top of it.

Where do you folks have the display panels? In the bulkhead between the cockpit and the cabin? I have no instruments on my boat and I kind of like it that way (no holes have been cut in the boat by previous owners for the most part), but given that our lake is flood control it seems wise to have a depth finder.

I made a small shelf out of teak with large radius edges. It is mounted above the seat between the campainion way and the gunnels.
Below the shelf I have my depth finder mounted, above I have my GPS and the satalite radio puck. Looks nice and functions well and protects the equipment from getting caught in the sheets when sailing. Only draw back is that you can not really sit against it when docked to use as a back rest.

Check out this month's issue #85 July/August of "Good Old Boat". There's an article in it by Alan Lucas entitled, "Fit a depth sounder without holes"

Joe,
Wasn't it Red that had fitted an insert to the companionway with mounts for his instruments? Had a single board that fitted into this insert to allow passage into the cabin?
I tried a search for "Red" under authors but nothing showed.

It may have been Red Rider. I remember someone on the forum who had a set up similar to that. I believe that Red owns an O'Day 222 and he's located in Little Rock AK.

My friend Wayne built some swing out gauge boxes out of StarBoard and mounted them just inside his companionway. He has a Garmin GPS mounted on a swing out on the Port side of his companionway also.

He mounted a knot transducer on his rudder. He has it set up on a car with a track so that he can raise it out of the water to prevent marine growth.

Alex, Abracadabra's P79 is likewise mounted forward of the keel, up under the v-berth.
