Importing an Engine into the States

If you live in the states and are considering buying a Beta from Steve
Birch, you might find the following helpful. Otherwise you might want to
just hit delete.

I recently bought a Beta 13.5, coupler, shaft, engine bed adapters and
prop for my Vega from Steve.

Step-by-Step

1. I contacted Steve and we talked via email and Skype about what I
wanted. He quoted me prices and I consider them very good, so I went
ahead and told him I wanted the engines, shaft, prop, coupling, mounting
plates, electrical panel, and stern gland. He also sent me the
Installation "manual" which is quite complete and he is always available to
answer other questions.

2. I wired the funds to the bank routing Steve gave me. It cost me $30.
I trusted Steve since we had done business before, so I sent the entire
amount.

3. When it all shipped Steve sent me email with the shipping information.
This included the actual flights from Heathrow to Seattle and the most
important number -- Air Way Bill (MAWB). He also mailed me a receipt in the
mail.

4. To check the shipment status I went to the following website and put in
the air bill number (the first three numbers are the airline code and the
rest the air bill number).

Cargo Portal Services - Track Shipments

The freight handler for my shipment was DHL Global and the airline was KLM
(operated by Northwest in the US).

5. Once it was at my airport (Seattle) I contacted DHL Global and was
routed to the local office. Two numbers for DHL in general are:

Customer Service: 1-800 225-5345
DHL Airfreight: 1-866 527-7298.

6. The people at DHL were most helpful and functioned as my customs
broker and also arrange the delivery to my house. They charged $140 for
their services. The delivery cost $40 (it is 30 miles to the airport).
The customs fee was 2.50% of the total. After running the numbers and
comparing what I bought with other vendors, I believe I saved quite a bit
overall -- and Steve has done all the research to get the right parts for
the Vega. Total time from when it shipped to when it was in my garage was
about 10 days (weekends included).

Now all I have to do is to install it -- that is the easy (fun) part
right?
