Pondering how often do you change you impellor? Obviously it's by hours run, but do you change it religiously every year? Every two? Thx

Impeller should be changed every two years for a regularly used outboard engine or recommended hours of use, whichever comes first.

Annually if not used regularly as it can fail by being brittle sitting idle.

An inboard impeller maintenance should be performed on a similar schedule.

Good question. I will be inspecting mine in another week when I change the oil on my Westerbeke. I have a brand new one but if the current one is not missing any pieces I will leave it alone.

I had a Mercury 9.9 on my last boat and I went 20 years without changing it.

If you can't remember the last time you changed it, it's over due. I replace my impeller every two years. Very cheap insurance.

Snip....

I had a Mercury 9.9 on my last boat and I went 20 years without changing it.
That's a great life span for the impeller, out of curiosity, how did it look inside after 20 years and how often was the engine used?

I don't know, I sold the boat.
I probably put about 20 hours a summer on it on Lake Ontario.
Being an outboard I wasn't too worried about pulling the engine to change it if it failed. After thinking about it some more I will change my impeller this fall whether it needs it or not. I just get mad at paying $50 for a rubber part that shouldn't cost more than $10.

Our first impeller on the Westerbeke lasted 6 years...or shall I say, I waited that long to check it..btw, it was fine, but I decided then I would change it every couple years, this year I checked it, and though it was fine went ahead and changed it...no vanes missing so far..I don't consider it a mileage deal...if you see a reduced amount of water coming out, it is a good sign that you should check it soon...

Some last longer than others. This one had one season under my management, but its age is unknown.

If there is any doubt, the impeller had 6 vanes.
