I am trying to find a part number for the fresh water pump impeller.
My manual states my 18 hp yanmar is a 2gm20 or a 2gm20f.
how can I find out which engine it is or is the impeller the same.

You are probably looking for the Raw Water Impeller. I believe that the 20F is fresh water cooled and the 20 does not need one because it is raw water cooled.

Are you looking for the impeller that comes from the thru hull seawater to the pump that is driven by the fan belt?

RBM, if you have a 2GM20F with Johnson raw water pump then the info you looking for is as follows:

What you're probably looking for is the Raw water or Sea Water impeller. The "F" engine has fresh water cooling which is a closed loop with coolant and heat exchanger. You should be able to see the heat exchanger on the top of the engine and should have an overflow bottle with coolant. Here's a good diagram from Yanmarhelp

The impellers are different for each model.
