Are the vanes in the bottom of the pump aligned properly? Whenever I remove the cover to inspect the impeller I see that the bottom vanes are always facing different directions. Just want to make sure that this is correct.

it is fine.. That is the result of the engine rocking back right at the end of shut down. You can see this by hitting the compression releases and turning the engine (in the correct direction) by hand while watching the vanes. You'll see them all turn in the same direction very quickly.. then stop and rotate backwards about a half turn and watch ..

This is why the old wives tale/myth about lining up your impeller vanes is just that, a myth.... This is perfectly normal...

When you first install a new impeller, even if you "bend" the vanes in the wrong direction, they will straighten themselves when you turn the engine on. No woorys.
