This weekend I tried changing the impeller on my Yanmar 4JHE that is im my Hunter 40 Legend. I tried the curved needlenosed pliers from Sears and an impeller puller but was only able to get it out about 1/4 inch. Is is advisable to remove the water pump so that I can put it in a vise to get more purchase? If anyone has any thoughts I would greatly appreciate.

Grease it up

But be careful not to grease where you're attaching the pliers. The thing is snug but it should pull. If all else fails and it falls apart, no harm since you're replacing it anyway. Be sure to grease the new one and add water with a West System syringe before reattaching.

Careful with impeller "grease"

Tom, go ahead and pull! However, please note that there is a caution on the replacement impeller instructions I have (Volvo) that says not to use petroleum based grease on the new impeller. They say it eats the blades (rubber?) Use teflon or silicone instead.

Keep Pulling

I changed my impellor on my 4JH2-TE last year. I must have tugged and wobbled for over a half hour before I got that sucker out! Keep on tugging and don't give up.
