I'm probably asking for advise a day late...

when I'm a dime short but anyway, here goes: I've recently ordered new top of the line racing sails from UK (Tape Drive Gold, 3.5 oz Technora) for my Hunter Vision 32, both headsail and mailsail, including the UK mailsail Lazycradle. The headsail is 129% which UK assures me that the Vision will carry very well. I've also ordered an 8-14' whisker pole (with downwind sailing and my existing gennaker in mind) and just added a Martec folding prop as well. All above is looking to the upcoming Newport-Essenada Race in late April. With my stock market portfolio in the tank (hell, I should say "what portfoliio?" at this point!) I'm starting to have significant buyers' remorse and frankly also wondering whether I'm maybe a little bit more than nuts. I'd appreciate any/all constructive freeback. My basic question: am I wasting my money on a V32? I'm a relatively new boat owner, racing a lot these days and enjoying it very much. BTW, the PHRF rating on the V32 is 168 but I may be re-rated due to above mods. Please be kind... <S> Rodger

168? I wish...

... my H25 had a rating that low! At 234, I get lots of time from everyone else in our club's "beer can" races... New racing sails, a folding prop, and a new whisker pole... This is about the shortest shopping list I've ever heard from a racer. If you're serious about racing, these items will help you get to the finish line first. If that's your goal, than I don't think you've spent too much- provided your gear is worth its reputation and it's well cared for. If you're planning on casual racing, once in a while, than maybe you've spent this years (and possibly next year's) equipment budget. As for whether you're wasting your money on a V32, I don't think so! I've heard nothing but good about the Vision series of boats. If I had enough money to buy one, I wouldn't think twice. --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

PHRF...

varies based on several factors, including what area the boat is in (and predomiment wind in area). In your case, if your new headsail and main are larger than your previous sails, your club handicapper will have to re-measure. The pole may also be taken in consideration, as well as the folding prop. As was your intent, these all tend to make the boat faster. The PHRF handicap is the means by which the field is leveled and theoritically, all boats starting a race should finish at the same time if crossing the starting line at the same place and time. So, everything done to a boat to make it faster needs to be compensated to keep the field leveled. So, your boat will be faster and if racing against the same people you should gain a few spots when crossing the finish line. The new PHRF will adjust that and the net results might even be the same ! Unless you and your crew really use these new tools to practice and get better in all racing aspects, equipment alone is not going to win races for you. Good Luck

..and as for the market, how are we going to pull out without some consuption? Congratulations on doing your part;>) If I'd kept AA, I would have done EXACTLY what you did and I even had gone so far as to price it. As for Ensenada, the shape of the main probably won't matter that much since it a downwind ride, but that's not the point. You will be doing some club racing and there it will make a huge difference over the old generic main. The prop will save you motoring time in light winds. You love to sail and these improvements are precisely the kind of improvements to enhance the experience. One more example of your good judgement. Next to Dede. Excluding investments. As to the V32 for this, that's the whole idea of PHRF handicapping. I'm envious. Rick D, AA2

Best investment to date

You are doubling your porfolio investment by purchasing those sails and doubling it again by putting it on a Vision 32. There is no better boat around and in racing, as you know, a Vision 32 keeps up with a lot of bigger boats. I am curious as you recommended a 135 Genoa for a V32, I have been able to find anybody who knew anything about sails on this 32. I am also envious, Sincerely, Jean Hrab

PHRF Adjustment

I think the only thing you'll take a hit on is the folding prop. You might take a hit on the wisker pole if the rating committee deems this to be a change from non-spinnaker to spinnaker. Your new sails shouldn't be a problem, particularly considering that your new genoa is still fairly small.

Thanks for the great feedback on racing gear...

it would appear I'm either a) not more than a little bit bit nuts as I said I feared above, or b) (I'll SWAG as the more likely scenario) there are other HOW folks out there who are more than a little bit nuts too. Just kidding of course. Well, sort of... The new main has a 3' roach which I didn't mention before. This no doubt has significant PHRF impact as well. Anyway, I now realize that I'm just going to have to step up and voluntarily do an amendent to my PHRF filing. I shamefully admit that I was trying to keep my head in the sand on this matter before, but since several HOW sailors have commented that this won't/shouldn't fly AND all of us HOW sailors are highly honorable folk (or we won't be HOW sailors would we?) I'm gonna take a new tack. FWIW, I've heard that a folding prop could add anywhere from 1 - 1 1/2 knots SOG. Maybe as Claude points out this does all net to zero, but I'll still gonna really enjoy getting to zero very fast. BTW, the prop is going on next week and I'll file a report as soon as I verify this. To Rick's point about consumption, I've got it bi time. That's why I'm investing in Attitude Adjustment instead of the market. (BTW, thanks Rick so much for all you've done, including the great care of AA thru the years. It's not a used boat, it "pre-owned".) I dunno if I entirely buy John's statements about doubling my investment <g> but I think he'd dead on in spirit and I KNOW that I'll not see a 75% hit on AA like I did at the NASDAQ gambling casino last year. Fair weather, calm seas and good air to all! Rodger
