I owned one of these fine little boats in the mid-eighties. Traded it for a Roberts Offshore 28. My little Sandpiper ended up on Bowen Island. The surveyor who did both boats raved about the Sandpiper's quality. We had no sailing knowledge or even much boating experience when we brought it home. I had bought a substantial book on sailing and studied up somewhat. We got the mast up and parked it at the dock. Of course we had no wind. The first weekend we had wind, we had lots. I said to the wife "sailboats are designed for this". We took off in 25 knots or so. After managing to raise the mainsail, we were immediately knocked down much to our dismay. Our young daughter was in the cabin wailing. Got it upright and was immediately knocked down on the other side. This shook us up good. We got the saildown and motored back to the dock to rethink our bad experience. We picked better weather next time and taught ourselves to sail. What a wonderful little boat! We travelled all over. We sailed it from Port McNeil to Vancouver and back for Expo. We trailered it to Mcleod Lake, north of Prince George. We had it on Skaha Lake in the Okanogan. We explored many west coast inlets. I miss that little boat. Safe sailing everyone.

Hi!

My Sandpiper is also my first boat. I learned to sail on her but I am lucky that I did not go through the same adventure you had. I intend to keep her for a long times because I enjoy sailing a lot and we all know that small boats sail more. I also am not affected by the cabin envy syndrome. BTW,your Piper sure looks great.

Hi Michel

Great choice for first sailboat. They are so safe. We were in conditions so extreme once or twice, we tied ourselves into the cockpit for fear of being thrown out.

Sandpiper

Hello, I have been looking for a trailerable sailboat for some time and just came across an ad for a sandpiper. It took me some time to find any information or it on the net. I have two questions. I want a small boat to trailer to the west coast where we spend most of our holidays. Does this boat have what it takes to sail in coastal waterways? And second, the seller is asking $5500. for the boat. Does this sound like a reasonable price? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks Jim

Piper

Hi Jim, There are no reasons why a Sandpiper could not handle coastal conditions. These little boats are very safe and make you feel like you were on a much bigger boat. They are made really solid also. I think the price asked is in the normal range in Canada. They tend to go for a bit more in Quebec right now. I never heard of somebody regretting having bought a Piper. They also sell easy.
