So Bob

So, if your sailmaker hit you with an extra $50 for inspecting your sail and telling you all else is ok other than what you told him to do , that would be OK with you? Truthfully, would you tell him no problem, or would you tell him, "if i wanted the rest of the sail inspected, i would have told you" Or......he would no longer be competitive if he had to automaticall add $50 to every job no matter how small to recoup the extra time. If you want your sail inspected and he will give you a price. If i tell an auto mechanic to fix my brakes, is he obligated to check my carbuertor? The first time I owned a boat, i knew nothing of sails, i told the sailmaker to check them out and let me know what has to be done. On the other hand, my dad would tell the sailmaker what to repair, then later down the line he would get mad because he would have another problem that the sailmaker should have checked for. Sometimes we dont always have the money to check everything out, we have repaired what we can afford and hope for the best.

I spoke to Ray at UK Sails in San Diego. He said he would take of it this week. He mentioned the loft is supposed to inspect the entire sail. He was very accomodating. Perhaps both he & I learned a lesson here. I know that in my business (I own an insurance agency), when a client comes in to conduct business I try to make a point of reviewing all policies. Of course its up to to the client to accept or decline my suggestions, but I'm the "expert". I guess I expect the same.

Makes sense that they should inspect the entire sail. A different Bob, I trust my sailmaker, been doing business with him for years. He always looks at my entire sail when I bring it in for repairs and I always tell him to repair what ever he thinks needs to be repaired. For me it's an all day trip to see him, and I don't want to make two trips because he/I missed something. It certainly does not cost $50 worth of time to spend five minutes walking around the sail while it's all spread out on the deck. What Bob F's sailmaker should have done was found the bad place and called him up and asked him if he wanted it repaired, which, naturally, he would. Then Bob F would have been grateful instead of mad.
