I am a lucky man. Today while taking my C22 back to the Gulf Coast, about 90 miles, I lost a wheel on the trailer doing about 60 MPH. It came off as we crossed a bridge with cars all around us but no one wrecked. I don't know if a wheel bearing froze or if something else happened but it sheared the lug studs off at the hub and the trailer dropped to the spring and before we could get stopped two of the leafs in the spring were also gone. I finally found a wrecker company that could load boat and trailer on a flatbed trailer and haul it off. The only damage to the boat was the boot stripe that I had put on last week. They say that God looks after little children and fools. . . and I'm not a child. I have attached a picture of it loaded on the trailer. Maybe we can finish the trip to the water next weekend. Fools Abound

Mark, don't feel alone. I nearly had the same thing happen when I first bought my boat. The fellow who sold it to me had gone to the trouble of replacing the leaf springs for me, so I guess I just figured the bearings would have been serviced as well. Halfway from the North Carolina interior to the Virginia border, the trailer started swaying. I pulled over. The driver's side hub had broken. Luckily, I was only a few yards from an exit, and traffic was light. I was able to limp off of the road and leave the boat in a parking lot. I returned the next day with a new hub and new bearings for both--major hassle; lots of extra driving; but boy, was I lucky.

i guess Skip is trying to say it's better to leave

your boat on the water... anyways...never guess what I'm doing..Yup, replacing the springs on my trailer. I bet they are the original springs. Glad my boat is only a '74... ha ha..So far I have the starboard side done. Glad I have neighbors that let me borrow the grinder and the sawzall and the muscle. I won't even mentioin all the stuff I used of my own just to get one side off. Amazing what some rust will do. I definitely will replace the wheel bearings also while it's all up in the air..but then,I enjoy working on this kind of stuff, isn't it all part of owning a boat...heck ya.. glad you made it okay.....

Back in the Water

Went Saturday and picked up the boat and trailer and pulled it on to Biloxi without a problem. It didn't cost me nearly what I thought it would for the tow and repair. Next weekend it should take about an hour to finish rigging it and then it will be time to sail again. Mark C22 #14007 "Markenda"
