From the day before the storm hit, the Gov. and the mayor of Houston were on TV explaining how they had prepared in advance. It was very encouraging from the beginning. If they didn't have their s**t together, it sure sounded like they did and that made me more comfortable. They seemed to have all of their ducks in a row including scheduled evacuation by zip code transmitted over radio and TV.
The clean-up effort seems to be going pretty good so far.
It was a shame to see so many boats on the sides of roads. Some of these fishing boats had 3 large outboards on them. But they did appear to be in-tact.
I was hoping to hear from some other members in the Houston area on here. They could be without power and trapped in their homes due to rubble in the streets. I figured if they evacuated, they would be on here.
I hope all is OK with them.
I'm also hoping that the damaged marinas look worse than they really are. My insurance went up 10X after Katrina, wonder how much more it will jump.
I figure that the clean-up of Galveston Bay itself will be pretty good due to the large amount of tankers and freighters.
I think Galveston Island is pretty much doomed to mediocrity. If its anything like Gulfport and Biloxi, Ms., people will not longer be able to get insurance and therefore will not be able to re-build.
Anyway, getting back on track, It sure would be nice to here from others on this forum in the Houston Galveston area and let us know you are OK.
Please guys, dont turn this political. I tried my best not to.

Ice and Water and Gas in Kemah

I was just told that there are places for free ice and water set up in Kemah. One on the places or POD's as they are called now (Points of Distribution) are in Target parking lot on corner of 2094 and 146.
Also, several gas stations are now open in the area.

This is great place to use as a bulletin board.
Thanks Phil for running a great website.

Insurance costs.

They shouldn't go up much more as they went up to cover situations like this. Here in Florida our insurance is sky high as well, and there are only a couple of companies that will even write it. Let us know what happens.

Good luck on your own personal recovery. I wish you well, it's good to hear from you.

You, your families, and friends are in our thoughts and prayers.

Having gone through Isabel, and other bad hurricanes as well as many tornadoes and severe winter blizards up in the mid-west, we can relate to the magnitude of the destruction around you.

We pray for you all to be safe and to somehow find some comfort in knowing that we are thinking of you all and praying for your welfare and that somehow things could be so much worse than they are. Most of the materialistic things can be eventually replaced.

Hopefully you all are safe, have food, water and shelter. We will pray for the recovery of your communities and for you all to be healthy and safe and to find strength through unity. Good luck and best wishes.

I have friends and family in Clearlake, Spring and up in the Woodlands. I hope they are ok; haven't been able to get through to them yet. Good to know that you made it.

I don't imagine you have been able to check on the status of the Island Mistress yet, have you?

Island Mistress

The marina manager gave a quick look today at the boats. All appears to be OK.
I will know more tomorrow. I will be going back to Kemah first thing in the morning. Still no power there yet. I was going to get a new Honda really quiet generator, but way up here in Austin, they already sold out all of their generators.
When I get back tomorrow, I will check out my shop. I was told by someone, that from a distance, the buildings are still standing in good shape and they didnt think the water got up that high. If all is OK, I have a generator in my shop. A very noisy one, but a generator none the less.

Thanks to all for your concern.

They have learned

The response to the arrival of Gustav and Ike was totally different than for Katrina. Lots of lessons learned the hard way. Of course at the time of Katrina, the gov. of Louisiana was a total idiot. But they have all learned, and I hope we never see the anything again so screwed up as the response to Katrina.

Porto Fino Marina is OK

Porto Fino Dockominiums (Floating Docks)has survived pretty well also.
Menestheus keeps his boat there, so we can assume his boat is OK also.

Pictures in this morning's paper show some of the

coastal areas scoured clean and severely eroded. The pictures show large debris fields on land but I wonder how much rubble is floating in the bays and bayous. Much of the detritous will be not biodegradable and will keep turning up on the beaches.

Men

Glad all worked out well for you.
We have 1 sinking at the end of my dock and about 1/2 dozen blown out jenny's.
There are 3 more sunlen boats near the head of the harbor and I'm not sure if these are even from here. Boats laying horizontal don't look like the same boat in a vertical position.

We got in today about noon from Austin. No real problems with traffic. We were too tired to cook to we had our welfare dinner from the Salvation Army. Redbeans and rice, LOL.
