On my Yanmar....
When we purchased our '80 Hunter 27, which was repowered in '91 with a 1GM10, it had no kill "switch". We discovered this on our maiden voyage when, after motoring out, we decided to raise the sails and realized that to shut off a diesel you don't just turn off the ignition switch -- the engine keeps going! With my wife at the helm, I went below to dig out the engine manual and we found the right lever after removing the access cover to the engine -- there was no remote cable attached. I guess the previous owners never used the engine or didn't find going below to stop it a hardship, but when we found a Yanmar dealer on one of our stops on the Chesapeake, we bought a shutoff cable. We had a Yanmar control panel similar to what you describe; on the lower left there was a D-shaped button in the plastic that could be popped out to accommodate the knob end of the shutoff cable. Pulling out on this knob a couple of inches shuts off the engine -- which should be done after revving it briefly to 3600 rpm and with the ignition switch still in the ON position, according to the manual. I had always wondered what the approximately 1" by 3" hole was in the side of the cockpit just a few inches below the Yanmar control panel. I finally saw another Hunter '27 of our vintage with the ORIGINAL stop cable knob mounted on a chrome bracket in this spot. Later I covered it with a dummy vent cover to keep water from entering here.Regards,Jon Zaimes AA1K"Airwaves"
