Yesterday, a new mystery occurred. While first starting the engine,
the alarm bell (that always beeps when the key is in the ignition)
sounded a little weak and inconsistent. When I started the engine
a second and third time yesterday, it was nonexistent. I'll be
checking on the wiring in the console - where it appears the speaker
for that alarm bell is. I'm slightly concerned the absence of the bell is
an indication that the glow plugs aren't getting current.
Has anyone else encountered this problem (and solved it)?

Thanks for your comments and insight, as always!

I don't think

I don't think the buzzer and the glow plugs share a circuit. Glow plugs require much more current than the warning buzzer and guages. Would think you have a bad or corroded terminal somewhere. The buzzer is tied in with the temp and oil pressure guages. Do they still work. If so, it is more than likely just the buzzer connections or circuit.

Diesel Engine?

Most of the sensors on diesel engines 'ground' through engine to 'energize'/open the sensor.

Check for wiring corrosion in the connectors, etc., look for voltage drops along the wiring harness to this particular sensor ... and then check the main engine ground for the same electrical integrity.

Sometimes these sensors fail but most times its corrosion in the circuit .... replace with tinned wire and use tinned connectors. Incredible most of todays engine wiring harnesses still use untinned, 'automotive grade' wiring... just 'cheap and dirty' that WILL eventually fail when it corrodes in the marine environment.

The alarm should sound when the key is on the on position. It tell you you have voltage on the wstarting system. You should keep this period of time short.

Yes, the alarm will sound a low bus sometime underway. I have the problem and so do a lot of Catalina owners.
