Peggie Hall has been extolling the virtues of PureAyre for a while now. I *finally* ordered a gallon bottle and dang I'm impressed. I've been using it at home for less than a week and it has made all the difference in the world. I feel like my house no longer has any odors. It works on carpet, upholstery and I've used it in the wash with rugs from the boat. It has an initial mint aroma but even that goes away. It does seem to work on, shall we say, airborne odors but it might still be a good idea to keep that book of matches around. You know, just in case.
You can order it from right here on the SBO store. http://shop.sailboatowners.com/prod.php?5698
You can also find it on Amazon.

It works really well. Glad we can get it here at sbo. Twice I have ordered it from pureayre and found that their shipping is very slow as in 2 to 3 weeks.
Good stuff. Thanks again Peggy.

PureAyre is not an air freshener...It's the only product I've found that eliminates ANY odor. Not only will it get rid of diesel and residual odor left behind by stinking sanitation hoses, but PureAyre is also rated for use around food...which means you can even use it to get rid of the odor left in your fridge by the steaks or fish that spoiled when a natural disaster took out shore power for 3 days. Also does a great job on musty PFDs and foulies.

How to use it:
You can never eliminate any odor unless you first eliminate the source...'cuz as long as the source continues to exist, it'll continue to generate new odor. So first you have to find and fix any leak or replace the stinky hoses, then thoroughly clean the site, including every nook and cranny ...a good scrubbing with detergent and water. Mop up an excess water and let the air dry till it's at least only damp...no standing puddles. Now you're ready to eliminate the residual odor. Use PureAyre full strength...I'd use pump garden spray jug set to a fine mist. Spray every surface, nook and cranny...just a light spray. Do NOT rinse...just let it dry with hatches open so that plenty of fresh air can circulate. If the soft goods in the cabin have picked up the odor, just spraying it on the surface won't do much...you need to spray enough on carpets and rugs to penetrate to the backing...enough to penetrate cushions to the middle from both sides..not enough to make 'em drippy, just enough to get into the cushion....you'll prob'ly have to remove the covers and send 'em to be cleaned. Again, just let everything dry. If you still have any odor, you missed a spot.

A spray bottle won't go very far...plus, it's cheaper in the long run to buy it by the gallon...it has an indefinite shelf life, so just keep it on hand.

We used PureAyre last week on a AC vent duct that always has a rubber odor. Since we don't need the AC during the summer the duct gets a little stale. Now that we have cool mornings I used the reverse heat and will check the odor next week for results.
Good info on using it on upholstery. The PO must have had a dog because the V-berth had that odor and we used rug shampoo to clean it. That would be the next area to get attention.

Peggie - My gallon says that it should be used up within one year. There are enzymes in there that degrade and the product is not as strong. Have you had experience with it in that it is still efficient after a year? It would sure be nice to not have to buy this every year because it is expensive.

Shelf life is greatly affected by temperature, especially heat. So most product mfrs estimate their shelf life VERY conservatively because a) they want a reason to move more product, and b) they don't want anyone to be able to claim that it didn't work when it was barely close to the stated shelf life. I've had a spray bottle on the shelf in my laundry room for nearly two years that still works just fine. Most projects on a boat that need it --residual odor in every locker permeated hoses had passed through, or diesel odor in a bilge that's also migrated into the cabin--will need most of a gallon, so even if you did keep a left-over quart too long, it's still less expensive than buying smaller sizes. Just don't store it in a dock locker or somewhere that can get hot.

We had tried for two years to get rid of the oder in a locker. Then, as Peggy described after replacing the old hose and using pureayre the old oder is gone and we can use the locker again. We stayed away for two weeks due to the heat and after being closed up that long there was no hint of any of the old oder when we returned this weekend.
Lesson learned, it pays to listen to our Headmistress.
