Looking to make a couple of hatch doors, exterior, about 10" x 20". If I can't get teak, or not at a decent price, are there any other woods that would be suitable to use instead? Thanks!!

Look for Ipe (pronounced E-Pay) .. It is a strong outdoor kinda wood like teak and just as rot-proof.. It is used in outdoor patio decks and such .. Picture is a box my buddy made of some scraps that we picked up at a deck job.. It is finished with clear Formby's Tung oil .. There is no coloring stain, that is natural color..

ipe is mexican ironwood, also brasilian..there is another kind of mexican ironwood with a name beginning in yu sound-- spozed to be good also--will have that name in short order, as i bought a mizzen sail and some rubberised sunbrella from him also---

ipe is gorgeous--i have been thinking about that and the other iron wood i cant remember name of f or my exterior woods....they both have similar characteristics to teak--

Bocote? Remember to wipe your glueing surfaces with acetone just before glueing and clamping some of these oily tropical hardwoods.
You'll get some workout lifting hatch boards made of ipe and if you should drop one it will do damage to what ever it hits

I'd say make lexan drop boards and then glue on a teak veneer. . .you could get really fancy and cut the veneer into 3-4 inch wide strips to make it look like it was glued together from boards on the outside and just paint the inside

Wink, if you're looking for a source for cypress or really anything else, Acadian Cypress in Ponchatoula carries cypress and many other woods , including exotic species. They can mill something specific for you as well. I made some companionway boards out of cypress tongue and groove that i pulled off the shelf there about ten years ago. I also found a huge spanish cedar timber that became the mantle over my fireplace.
More like how not to do it!! I'm not like Sumner or Main Sail!!

Of course, teak would be nice. You can find it from choice lumber sellers via eBay and other places, or find a REAL lumber yard and have them get you some.
For what it's worth, I changed out all the teak on my boat for mahogany, which looks nicer when varnished and holds a finish longer & better.

is the teak wood in the lumber store green teak or kiln dried?? you want green teak or use a cypress or some pretty wood--heck i would go to wood store and shop the stuff--i love the smell of wood---and i hate shopping --shopping for wood is different--kinda like a good junk yard, only new stuff.....reclaimed cypress would also be cool for doors.....

There are many woods that will work well, it is really up to your preferences and pocketbook. Paduak is a beautiful wood that has bright red hues when freshly sanded. It is photo sensitive and will darken with sun exposure, eventually it becomes quite dark, but still beautiful. Here is a great link with lots of information:
