Identifying Bottom Paint

Hello,

I bought a boat over the weekend and it needs new bottom paint. I went to West Marine and the worker was not much help. I picked up two cans of West Marine Brand Bottom Paint. Probably should have spent a little more... but I just bought a boat this weekend. LOL On the can it reads that it is not compatible with soft bottom paints. Anyone have an idea of how to tell what is on my boat? It is in fresh water and when you wipe it with a rag the rag turns blue. The boat on my profile is the boat. Not that you can really tell from that far away. I appreciate any and all help.

Cheers,
C

Sounds as if you've got a soft, ablative paint on there right now.

The previous owner only had it 6 months and was transferred for work. Thank you

Thank you! I guess I will need to get the primer that helps them bond? Any thoughts?

IF you do not know what paint is on the boat and you are able to have acess to a used can of paint that you want to put on, do a test patch and see if it reacts at all. That will help.
